Sapphire Crochet Cowl A Free Crochet Pattern is an advanced beginner to intermediate level crochet pattern that is fast and cost-effective.
The yarn I chose for the Sapphire Crochet Cowl A Free Crochet Pattern is Yarn Bee Authentic Hand-Dyed Tonal in Dark Denim fingering weight yarn held double. This pattern requires DK weight yarn or fingering weight yarn held double. I purchased this yarn in my massive Clarance yarn haul from Hobby Lobby this past April which you can watch here.

You need 460 yards total or 200 grams to get this project done. This is a crochet project that would be great to sell at holiday craft fairs or to make for Christmas presents. Merino Wool is a lovely fiber to crochet with.

Sapphire Crochet Cowl A Free Crochet Pattern utilizes the half double crochet stitch and half double crochet stitch in the third bar. The beautiful effect this pattern presents is by working these two stitches in an ABAB pattern which is explained further below in the pattern as well as here in my Sapphire Crochet Cowl A Free Crochet Pattern YouTube Tutorial:
If you would really like to make an impressive crochet cowl, this is one that you can achieve for very little effort in a very short amount of time.
Another thing I really like about the Sapphire Cowl is that it is flexible to your gauge. You can adapt this pattern to your liking to fit your gauge as a crocheter, there is no gauge necessary for the Sapphire Crochet Cowl A Free Crochet Pattern.

Sapphire Crochet Cowl
A Free Crochet Pattern
By Brianna Lentz

Level: Advanced Beginner / Intermediate
Materials Needed:
DK Weight yarn or Fingering weight held double – 460 yards total or 200 grams
Size J / 6.0 mm crochet hook
Stitch Markers
Abbreviations Used: CH – Chain HDC – Half Double Crochet
Note:
This Cowl is worked from the top down in one piece increasing in the front.
Always work the first stitch of each round in the same as the CH 1.
Every second HDC in the entire Cowl is worked in the 3rd BAR. The 3rd BAR is the horizontal bar located behind the HDC stitch in the previous Round.
It is important to also note that this pattern is a repetitive ABAB pattern.
You work: A – HDC B – HDC in 3rd BAR I provide a video tutorial on Youtube here to give you a visual example of how to locate this 3rd BAR:
Directions:
CH 80, carefully join without twisting your work.
Round 1: CH 1, HDC in each chain around, join. (80)
Starting in Round 2, and continuing throughout the rest of the Cowl, work every 2nd HDC in the 3rd BAR only. ABAB pattern begins. Your work should always begin with regular HDC and your last stitch of the round should always end with HDC in the 3rd BAR.
Rounds 2-14: CH 1, HDC, HDC in 3rd Bar repetitive ABAB pattern around, join. (80)
Increase Rounds
The next 18 Rounds will be Increase Rounds. For the Increase Rounds, you will continue to work your ABAB pattern. When working an Increase, you will start with a regular HDC and then place a HDC in the 3rd BAR in the SAME stitch. The next 16 Rounds will be Increase Rounds.
15: CH1, HDC in first 39 stitches, (HDC in the 3rd BAR, HDC) in next 2, continue the pattern, join. (82)
16: CH1, HDC in first 40 stitches, (HDC, HDC in the 3rd BAR) in next 2, continue the pattern, join. (84)
17: CH1, HDC in first 41 stitches, (HDC in the 3rd BAR, HDC) in next 2, continue the pattern, join. (86)
